Since yesterday, there has been an “article” going around titled \u201cSeven Dead Mediterranean Monk Seals have been Located in the Aegean During the Lockdown Period\u201d. Firstly, this is a truly disturbing title not only because of the number of dead animals but also because of their connection to the quarantine! However, as we are unsurprisingly receiving a large number of questions related to this, we would like to clarify certain points and put the situation back into perspective:<\/p>\n
What we often tend to overlook, either purposefully or accidentally, is the fact that death is life\u2019s inevitable companion. As an expert body on the matter, having ceaselessly observed the Mediterranean monk seal population in Greece over the past thirty years, we know that in recent years, the average number of dead seals found along Greek shores is around 35 animals per year. Obviously, not all dead animals are found, therefore the real (unknown) number of animals dying is even larger. Is this normal? To a degree, yes, perfectly normal, as all living beings are born, live and, at some point, die. It would be at the very least naive to think that out of the 400 seals currently estimated to live in Greek waters today, none die! Are animals found killed by a human hand? Unfortunately, yes. However, it is a massive leap of logic from this to irresponsibly concluding that every single animal found dead has been intentionally killed (as the article in question implies). Our long-standing experience has taught us that, even in cases where full necropsies are performed by the expert veterinarians with whom we cooperate, it is hard to tell the death cause with certainty, especially in cases where the animal is in advanced decomposition. If we now consider the period which this article mentions, we can see that the locations of these animals, which were also found in different areas of Greece, are spread over a timeframe of at least 3 months. Additionally the fact that they were all found on beaches is not surprising at all, as the animals that end up on beaches are the ones that are usually located. Should we be worried? No, but we must continue to try, as a society, to eliminate the unjust killing of animals, whether that is seals or otherwise. Besides, society as a whole has made amazing progress over the past years towards this goal, considering that until a few decades ago, animals such as dolphins had an official bounty on their head set by the Greek state! On the contrary, today, there is legislation in place for the punishment of the acts of harming or killing animals. In any case, this ecological doomsaying does nothing to help the situation. We remind you that around 2.5 years ago, when Agia Zoni sank in Salamina, many, and in a very similar tone, were quick to announce the total ecological destruction of the Saronic Gulf. This was of course quickly disproved, confirming the calmer and more reliable voices of reason (and today we can watch and admire monk seals on the rocks of Peiraiki!).<\/p>\n
